Underground Residential Distribution

The distribution of power via underground wiring for housing communities.

Underground residential distribution (URD) is an electrical best practice for the distribution of power within residential communities. Underground distribution helps minimize the risk of electrical fires and weather-related outages. It is also aesthetically pleasing and a desirable feature for property valuation and resale.

The Roatan Electric Company (RECO) is responsible for installing and maintaining only overhead distribution lines. For communities desiring URD, it is the responsibility of the property developer to install underground distribution lines to bring power from RECO’s primary distribution pole. URD systems are designed by the developer during master site planning and may only be installed by RECO-certified electrical contractors.

Vegas Electric has been a RECO-certified electrical contractor for over 20 years. As a certified URD installer, Vegas Electric not only completes the installation but also prepares and manages submission of all engineering designs and documentation required by RECO.

How it Works

PRIMARY FEEDER

The distribution system connects to a primary feeder high voltage overhead transmission line owned by the utility (RECO). The primary feeder generally carries three phase power. Connecting to the primary feeder must be approved and supervised by RECO engineers.

Underground Conduit

Vegas Electric engineers design the distribution layout and oversee the trenching to ensure proper depth.  Conduit is laid to provide protection for the high voltage cable.

Laying Cable

Vegas Electric electricians run high voltage cable through the conduit.

CABLE JUNCTION PEDESTALS (CJP)

High voltage cable runs between the primary feeder and the junction pedestals.  Pad mounted junction pedestals section out three phase current to single phase current.

 Pulling High Voltage Cable

High voltage cable is pulled through the conduit and into the cable junction pedestal.

Transformers

Pad mounted transformers receive single phase high/medium voltage and transform power to lower voltages delivered through service laterals to metering assemblies.

Meter Assemblies

Individual electrical meters that service each home are grouped together in meter assembly cabinets.

Commissioning

After all the equipment is installed, the system is tested and commissioned and all documentation is filed with the utility (RECO).
