Generator Power

For reliable backup power or to go completely off-grid

When it comes to generators, Vegas Electric can do it all.  We got our start installing micro-grids powered by diesel generators.  That was before there existed a utility company on the island and it was our core business for many years.

30+ years later, we have diversified into renewables.  But we are still installing and maintaining generators.  From frequent short outages to a hurricane which can knock out the power for days - the grid on Roatan is not perfectly stable and there are still remote locations where the grid doesn't reach. If guaranteed continuity of service or off-grid living is important to you then a generator is going to be an essential component of your energy solution.

Whether its hurricane winds knocking out power for days, frequent half day outages, or living off-grid, if continuity of service is critical a generator is an essential component of your energy solution.

Since 2012 we have been working predominantly with WINCO generators.  We stand by this brand for durability, reliability, load capacity and scalability.  However we will order and install any brand generator that our clients request.

Choosing the right generator for your needs is a critical decision point.  It’s an expensive piece of equipment and should be built to last in a marine environment.  Vegas Electric will help you evaluate and select  equipment designed to meet your current and future needs.

Things to Consider

Conditions of Use: Prime versus Standby

Standby - The primary application of the generator is to supply emergency back-up power for a limited duration during a power outage.

Prime - this generator is intended to act as the primary source of power, where there is no connection to the grid nor to solar.

Diesel vs. Natural Gas

Diesel - diesel generators cost more upfront but have lower maintenance costs.  Given the same capabilities, are smaller in size than gas, but usually louder.  They are more fuel efficient and the fuel is less flammable.

Natural Gas - gas generators require a lower initial investment cost but have a higher maintenance costs and shorter lifespan.  They burn cleaner with less greenhouse gas emissions and no diesel odor.

Indoor vs. outdoor

Outdoor - outdoor generators are the easiest to install.  They require at minimum a concrete pad and, while we recommend marine grade assembly, it’s best to provide some protection from extreme weather.

Indoor - indoor generators require a purpose built generator room with emission control.  It’s a more expensive installation that outdoor, but offers better protection from the weather and reduced noise.

Automatic Transfer Switch

An automatic transfer switch, or ATS switch, connects your standby generator to your home. When the transfer switch detects a power outage, it switches your home to generator power. Afterward, it detects when the power is restored and switches your home back to utility power. As a manufacturing representative for Schneider Electric, we primarily install ASCO transfer switches.

Generator Sizing

Sizing of your generator is vitally important from both a cost and performance perspective.  Accurately determining your load requirements is vital to proper sizing

Underloading - running a generator with a lighter load than it is designed for can shorten the lifespan, reduce fuel efficiency, and increase maintenance costs.

Overloading - running a generator with a heavier load than it is designed for can cause output of intermittent power that can damage appliances.

Vegas Electric will work with you to evaluate your needs, and use a date driven approach to propose the size that's right for you.
